Although Ghana is one of the most developed countries in West Africa, there are still humanitarian needs of the people that have to be addressed. The northern part of the country is lagging economically behind the south and this reflects on the living conditions of the people. Issues there include pockets of food insecurity, weak infrastructure and insufficient health care.

Conflicts in countries surrounding Ghana have made it a destination for refugees. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as of November 2006, there were more than 46,000 refugees and 5,500 asylum-seekers in the country.

The Muslim minority of Ghana is a growing population in need of mosques and schools to strengthen and maintain spiritual upbringing.
