Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and is suffering greatly from the current food and fuel crisis. The agricultural sector, in particular, has taken a severe hit due to frequent natural disasters, such as hurricanes. The UN has declared that a large portion of the Haitian population is at high risk of undernourishment and starvation, and that this risk has heightened over the last few years. The majority of the population cannot afford food. The education infrastructure has also been greatly hindered by the current food and fuel crisis, and by natural disasters.
