As one of the more under-developed Balkan nations, stimulating economic growth and development continue to be challenges for Macedonia, although substantial progress has been made in both areas over the past several years. High rates of unemployment and poverty hinder the economic development of the nation. Macedonia has the fourth largest population of Muslims in all of the European countries and many Muslims continue to live under the poverty line. Children are often forced to work to support their families instead of going to school to receive a competitive education.
