During the 1990s, civil war and intense fighting in Sierra Leone caused hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. There are close to 30,000 refugees from Liberia seeking asylum in the country, putting pressure on an already strained economic system. Many locals and refugees are kept from basic and life-saving healthcare because of distance and costs. The entire population of Sierra Leone is at a constant risk on contracting malaria. The Muslim communities of Sierra Leone have been marginalized and many do not have mosques in which to worship and learn about their faith.

The Dr. Wafaa Suwari Mosque was constructed and completed over the summer of 2009 in Salina Songo, Sierra Leone.
