An estimated two million people have died over the past two decades from war-related causes and famine in southern Sudan, and millions more have been displaced. Social and economic disparities are major contributing factors to the Sudanese conflict. The crisis in Darfur State in western Sudan has raised serious concerns about a major humanitarian disaster, with an estimated one million people displaced and more than 100,000 people forced into neighboring Chad.
