In Islam, a special, ongoing version of charity exists known as sadaqah jariyah, which continues to benefit both its recipients and donors beyond the donors’ lifespan.

But what exactly is sadaqah jariyah, and how can we make use of this incredible opportunity to benefit our human family across generations? Scroll to find out more, as well as how you can make your gift with us.

The Definition of Ongoing Charity in Islam

The term sadaqah jariyah in Arabic translates literally as either “flowing”, or “running” (jariyah) “charity” (sadaqah), and can also be described in its entirety as “ongoing charity”. In this charity, the benefits of its giving continue to flow to its recipients even after the passing of the donor. The term also takes a double meaning in that the blessings of these charitable acts also continue to flow in benefit of the donor’s soul in the afterlife.

Examples of giving this ongoing charity include contributing to the construction of a hospital that will treat generations of patients, supporting the education of a child who will use their newfound knowledge to benefit themselves and those around them, and helping to establish continual means by which communities can access clean water or nutritious food. Islamic teachings encourage Muslims to be both consistent and creative in their giving - paving the way for new means of mercy and hope to arrive in communities that would otherwise suffer without essential goods and services.
