Since August 2024, Bangladeshis living in its southeastern region have been in a constant struggle for survival. Record-level monsoon flooding washed away everything they had and created a multitude of health, nutrition and shelter crises.
Read on to learn more about Bangladesh flood victims’ situation and how you can extend your hand to help them:
The 2024 Bangladesh Flood Crisis
During the peak of summer 2024, devastating floods ravaged southeastern Bangladesh, affecting over 4.5 million people whose stability and livelihoods were washed away instantly. 11 out of Bangladesh’s 64 districts were struck by monsoon rains and upstream runoff, including Cumilla, Feni, Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, and Moulvibazar.
According to Reuters, the floods also destroyed an estimated 1.1 million metric tons of rice, a key dietary staple for the country’s people, and over 200,000 tons of vegetables. Agricultural losses from the floods as a whole for Bangladesh are estimated at $380 million USD and this has also caused a 20% surge in food pricing within the past few months.
Bangladesh flood victims have lost their shelter, food and sanitation access and without proper humanitarian aid, their situation will continue to worsen.
