Response to Humanitarian Crisis
Despite the nation's strong agricultural base, periodic droughts and desertification brought on by climate change have made food shortages and economic instability worse. High rates of malnutrition, particularly among children, and restricted access to healthcare and education, especially for women and marginalized groups, are other issues that Mauritania faces.
Zakat Foundation of America has been in the region for over a decade providing food security through the Seasonal Islamic Giving program. Ramadan food packages and Udhiyah-Qurbani meat help struggling families receive nourishing food staples.
