In early October 2024, residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina woke up to devastating flash floods and landslides after intense rainfall swept through the region. The worst-hit municipalities of Jablanica, Konjic, Fojnica, Kiseljak, and Kreševo reported severe damage, with boulders weighing over ten tons moving through communities, destroying homes and isolating entire areas. More than 25 lives were lost, and 1,133 households across the affected regions were impacted. Roads and essential services were severely damaged, complicating emergency response efforts.
In response to the crisis, the Zakat Foundation of America acted swiftly, providing immediate relief to families in need. Our teams distributed 500 food packages, 400 blankets, 100 children's coats, and 100 pairs of winter boots. Despite challenges in reaching isolated areas, we were able to deliver aid quickly, particularly focusing on the most vulnerable, the children, helping them stay warm and protected from the harsh conditions as winter approached.
Fatima Omerović, a 35-year-old mother of three, faced a devastating blow when floods destroyed her home and belongings, and her husband became unable to work. Struggling to meet her children’s basic needs, she was in a dire situation. However, our emergency relief brought a glimmer of hope. Fatima received food packages, blankets, winter coats, and boots for her children. This helped the family survive the harsh winter, alleviating Fatima's worries and providing essential warmth and sustenance.
Since mid-2018, Bosnia and Herzegovina have seen an increase in refugees and migrants fleeing conflict zones. This influx has prompted humanitarian organizations, including ours, to provide basic aid, such as food through our Seasonal Islamic Giving Program and Emergency Relief in such situations.
