In the Indian state of Bihar, a sharp lack of available industrialization and development projects paired with high population density has led to a crisis of significant unemployment. According to gathered data, an estimated 2 million people living in Bihar are currently registered with employment exchanges, government offices that help job seekers find jobs.

To help alleviate the plight of the unemployed in the region, Zakat Foundation of America provided cycle carts for 50 heads of family in villages of the Araria district of Bihar.

Across Bihar, cycle carts are one of the most common means of transportation and are an important source of income for rural youth and families, as the carts are used to transport both passengers and goods daily. Our project focused specifically on providing cycle carts to family heads who had been unable to secure regular employment despite actively searching for it.

Overall, our beneficiaries reported an average daily income of $5-$7 USD through transporting both passengers and goods with their carts. This translated to $150 to $210 USD in income monthly, which helped them meet basic household needs like food, education for their children, and healthcare, as well as begin saving for future needs. This project positively impacted a total of 350 individuals (the 50 family heads and their family members), contributing to their financial stability and independence.

Many beneficiaries, who previously relied on irregular labor jobs or struggled with unemployment, gained a sense of purpose and self-worth by becoming self-employed. This not only improved their confidence but also allowed them to work with dignity. The project also had a multiplier effect on the local economy. Beneficiaries purchasing goods or services for their work, such as repairs or supplies, contributed to the livelihood of other community members, creating a small but meaningful economic boost.
