The latest federal count reports over 770,000 people experiencing homelessness across the United States, living in shelters or on the streets. Americans across the eastern and southern states, including Washington, D.C., endured brutal weather as an arctic blast brought single-digit temperatures, negative wind chills, and historic snowfall all the way to Florida.

Amid this crisis, the Zakat Foundation of America held events across the country during MLK Week 2025. From California to North Carolina and New York to Illinois, Zakat Foundation of America distributed food, winter kits, and many needed items to those in need.

In the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., Zakat Foundation of America hosted a blanket distribution on MLK Day at McPherson Square, bringing comfort and warmth to those experiencing homelessness. Alongside dedicated volunteers, Zakat Foundation of America provided essential items to individuals in need. Khalil Demir, Executive Director of the Zakat Foundation of America, participated in the effort, embodying the spirit of compassion and unity. “In these challenging times, we must come together to support our neighbors in need,” Demir said. This initiative underscores Zakat Foundation of America’s unwavering commitment to serving vulnerable communities with dignity and care.

During MLK Week 2025, Zakat Foundation of America distributed blankets at several locations in D.C., including the Federal City Shelter, Emergency Shelter on New York Avenue, McPherson Square, and outside the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. Each distribution was an opportunity to connect with the community and make a positive impact.
