DURHAM, NC, 9 May 2019 — Zakat Foundation of America and Masjid Ibadurrahman will distribute 400 grocery boxes to families in the parking lot at 5104 Revere RD from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. this Sunday, May 12.The Islamic Center of Lumberton will give out an additional 100 food cases from Zakat Foundation on Saturday, May 11 in Robeson County, still recovering from last September’s Hurricane Florence devastation. The 25-pound food cartons include rice, oil, flour, soups, pasta and pasta sauce, along with canned chickpeas, vegetables and kidney beans.
“We’ve been keyed into helping people in North Carolina since Florence surged up the coast and inundated inland cities eight months ago,” said Halil Demir, Zakat Foundation’s executive director. “We haven’t let up since.”
Florence caused $17 billion in damage to the state, by far the greatest natural disaster in North Carolina history.
Other partner organizations aiding with grocery box voucher distribution include the Islamic Association of Raleigh, Islamic Center of Morrisville, Welcome House for Refugees, and Benson Memorial United Methodist Church.
“The grocery giveaway couldn’t be more timely,” said Imam Abdenasser Zouhri from Islamic Center of Morrisville. “Our community’s needs stand at an all-time high, and it is Ramadan.” Ramadan is the Muslim month of fasting, fulfilling neighborly needs, and purification from the world through a focus on prayer and good deeds. “So it’s more than food. It’s faith at work and love of our community.”
