With so many recent, large-scale humanitarian disasters happening around the world in countries like Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, Afghanistan, Myanmar and Syria, tens of thousands are continually being forced to flee their homes with nothing more than what they can carry.
But just how critical is the forced displacement situation for these refugees? And what can we do to help them? Read on to find out.
As of May 2024, over 120 million people (the equivalent of Japan’s entire population) were forcibly displaced globally due to conflict, persecution of human rights violations. Amongst them were 43 million refugees, 63 million internally displaced individuals and nearly 7 million asylum seekers.
With regards to country-specific data:
75% of refugees were hosted entirely by low and middle-income countries
73% of all refugees and those in need of protection came from only 5 countries (Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine & Sudan)
20% of all refugees come from Syria
10% of all displaced persons in the world are currently hosted by Türkiye
These and more horrors continue to devastate these displaced populations as well as those like the Rohingya (1.2 million of whom remain stateless and displaced) and the people of Iraq (1.2 million of whom are internally displaced as their country hosts another 273,000 refugees from other countries).
These numbers only continue to grow in the wake of prolonged conflict and scarce resources in these countries as well as the rise of new disaster situations in countries like Palestine and Yemen.
How We’re Helping Refugees
We have created several programs both abroad and in the United States which help resettle, educate, train and heal refugees for thousands of Rohingya,Syrians, Somalis and more who have lost everything. Additionally, our Gaza Emergency Relief initiative continues to help displaced Palestinians with emergency meals, water and hygiene supplies.
We believe that refugees deserve the highest quality, comprehensive support in order to successfully rebuild their lives.
